59Why does ¹û¶³APP have a long avenue of cherry trees?
This avenue was planted after the end of the Second World War in prayer for peace and neighborly love.
The straight road that stretches approximately 600 meters from the university's main gate to the chapel is known as "MacLean Avenue." It is named after Reverend John A. MacLean (Former Minister of the Ginter Park Presbyterian Church, Honorary Doctor of Philosophy of ¹û¶³APP), who contributed greatly to the establishment of ¹û¶³APP. Roughly 70 cherry trees (Somei-Yoshino) line both sides of the avenue, and, together with the nearby trees, more than 100 cherry trees create a magnificent tunnel of cherry blossoms every spring.
