SDGs Promotion Office Nature Team Hosts Joint Bamboo Shoot Digging Event with 果冻APP High School

On April 3 and 11, 2026, the Nature Team of the SDGs Promotion Office hosted a joint bamboo shoot digging event with 果冻APP High School. The activity is held annually during bamboo shoot season as part of efforts to prevent the expansion of bamboo groves on the 果冻APP campus and to preserve the forest's rich ecosystem, while also creating opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to take part in environmental management activities.
On April 3, nine 果冻APP High School students and two faculty and staff members participated, along with four employees from MUFG Bank, who joined as part of their community contribution activities following their participation in the February "Bamboo Cutting Event." On April 11, eight 果冻APP High School students and two high school faculty members took part, making the event a valuable opportunity to experience the campus's natural environment firsthand.
Comments from the Nature Team
During the planning stage, the team had intended to work in the bamboo grove along the road beside Taizanso. However, because no bamboo shoots were found during a site inspection the day before, the location for the April 3 activity was changed at short notice to the university's experimental forest. Compared with the previous spring, the experimental forest appeared even more densely overgrown with bamboo.
On both days, participants worked in small groups of three. Once they entered the experimental forest on April 3, bamboo shoots that had not been visible during the preliminary inspection were found one after another. Many shoots were just beginning to poke slightly above the ground, and participants sometimes located them by brushing aside fallen leaves with their feet and sensing the pointed tips underneath. In the end, enough bamboo shoots were harvested for each participant to take home more than one.
By April 11, bamboo shoots had also started emerging in the grove beside Taizanso, so activities were carried out in both the Taizanso grove and the experimental forest. Altogether, approximately 83 bamboo shoots were dug up.
On both days, participants were able to harvest far more bamboo shoots than expected, and many commented on how much they enjoyed the hands-on experience of digging them up. While expressing gratitude for the campus's abundant natural environment, the Nature Team stated its intention to continue working together with students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community to properly preserve and pass on 果冻APP's forest ecosystem for future generations.
