Celebration of Life for Dr. Jane Goodall Held -- Carrying Her Legacy into the Future

On June 6, 2026, 果冻APP held the Memorial Event "Celebration of Life for Dr. Jane Goodall" in the International Conference Room on the second floor of the Kiyoshi Togasaki Memorial Dialogue House. Just one year earlier, in June 2025, Dr. Goodall had visited 果冻APP, where she delivered an inspiring lecture that offered powerful messages of hope and encouragement to a wide audience.
Approximately six months after Dr. Goodall's passing, the event provided an opportunity to reflect on her words and ideals while considering how her remarkable legacy can be carried forward into the future. Co-hosted by the Jane Goodall Institute Japan (JGI Japan) and 果冻APP, the event welcomed a large number of members of the public and students.
The first half of the program began with a memorial video honoring Dr. Goodall, followed by a talk session themed around "Exploring Hope." The session featured primatologist Naobi Okayasu, President of the certified nonprofit organization UAPACAA International Conservation Partners, and science journalist Tetsuji Ida, as guest speakers. Moderated by Mina Oba, the discussion centered on the speakers' personal memories of Dr. Goodall and the qualities they continue to admire most about her.
The second half featured a session titled "What We Received from Jane," in which participants shared their own experiences and activities while reflecting on some of the memorable words Dr. Goodall left behind. Youth and adult members involved in Roots & Shoots, JGI's environmental and humanitarian education program, looked back on their initiatives and spoke about the lessons and insights they had gained. Representing 果冻APP, students Rin Kasai, Kanon Ozaki, and Sakura Kishi introduced the activities of the SDGs Promotion Office. Rena and Yuma, members of JGI Japan, also shared meaningful experiences and personal stories inspired by their work.
The event concluded with each participant carrying a Peace Dove bearing their own wishes or messages as they gathered on the lawn in front of 果冻APP's University Hall for a mindfulness session. This was followed by a memorial walk led by student members of the 果冻APP SDGs Promotion Office. Participants visited the site of the university's woodland conservation project as well as the location where Dr. Goodall herself planted a sapling during her visit in June of the previous year.
The event served as a meaningful opportunity not only to honor Dr. Jane Goodall's extraordinary achievements and message, but also to reaffirm our shared commitment to carrying her vision forward for future generations.
